More polynomials...

Explain (could be in step form) how to factor the following polynomials. (2) = squared

1) 2x(2)+ 10x -24
2) 4x(2) + 20x + 25
3) x(2) - x – 12
4) 9x(2) - 81

For a challenge...

We have been working with polynomials the past couple weeks. Use what you know about multiplying polynomials to solve this problem:

Pretend you want to fit a perfectly shaped circular rug into your perfectly square room. All you know right now is that the radius of the rug is "r" feet long. 1) Find the area of the rug, 2) the area of the room and then 3) the area of the room that won't be covered by the rug. (hint -draw a picture!)

Then, when you finish -complete any study island assignments that you need to do!

Have you seen gas prices lately???!!

Part One: The commute!
Miss Slawinski and I carpool when we can to save on gas. (I like to make her drive in the winter because I get so nervous in the snow!) Every time, we get off the freeway and drive past the BP on Rt. 306 - I get excited because gas prices have fallen... a lot! Check out the article below.

One of your first posts were about filling your gas tank. Now, with the new gas price in the article, find how much it would cost to fill your tank. Find the difference between what you would have paid a month ago to now. One more thing - find me the lowest local gas price in Lake County!

Part Two: The Reason
Now, although I actually don't mind filling my 12 gallon tank for $1.94 a gallon, I read the article below to learn more about why gas prices are falling. Check it out, especially paragraph 4. Write a paragraph about this article and what you learned.

Poly - what?

Hi Guys-

So, polynomials - what are they and why the heck are you learning about them? Well, here are some links I found to help you understand polynomials. This is a big unit in Algebra so it's better to embrace learning about them than struggling all the way through! :) For this assignment #8, watch the video, click on the links and explore the websites. Then, POST about something new you learned AND something that is now clearer for you. After you have posted, leave me a comment on this assignment so I know you are done! :)

Assignment #6

Look on the left hand side of my blog to see all of our classmate's links to his/her blog. Find your name and then click on the person's blog who comes before AND after you alphabetically (Nick and Joey - you will go to each other's page for the before and after person :) Read one of their assignments. After you do that - post a comment and question in response to what they wrote.

After you are done with that, click on the link on the left, top side of my blog, "Study Island"

You can log in with your username (i.e. BethanyMako.PPS) and then your password is your lunch number. There are 5 assignments posted that will be due in a month. You may choose a game mode to complete the questions, however you must do AT LEAST 10 questions. If you get lower than a 70%, try again. See me for help if you cannot log in.

Help with equations

So guys - some of you feel confident about equations and some of you still need a little time... Here is a basic website I found to help with one, two and multi-step equations. No - you are not morons like the title states - far from it! It's just outlined basically so EVERYONE can understand equations :)

Assignment #5 - Graded!

Hello Honor Students!

For this assignment, due October 23, I want you to check out the link below:

This will take you to a link that gives tips to saving money living in Cleveland. Take a couple minutes to read the titles of the articles and find TWO that interest you. After you read them, answer these questions on your blog in COMPLETE sentences for each article:

1) What article did you chose and why?
2) How does it relate to you? (if not you, your parents, your grandparents, your aunts, uncles, older siblings, etc.)
3) What did learn from reading this article? Be specific!

Assignment #4 - Graded

This assignment is worth 15 points and will be due October 20, 2008. So, continuing on from Assignment #3, complete the following:

1) Check out this article:

2) Let's say you are an "average" American based on that article. How many total miles are spent driving to work in one week (remember you drive TO and FROM work each day)?

3) Now, if you are like a typical American, you are doing more driving than just to work and back. In an average week, I drive around 350 miles per week! Use this equation, 350/mpg x P = T (mpg = whatever your car's mpg is, P = local gas price, T = total cost) to find out how much you will spend on gas in one week. Bonus - could you write an equation to find out how much you spend on gas in one month?

Assignment #3 - Graded!

So, how many of you dream of the first car you will own? Well, in this assignment, let's pretend that you just graduated from college and your super-generous parents are going to buy you WHATEVER car you want! However, you have to pay for gas with hard earned money you will be making in your first job :) In this 15 point assignment due THIS Wednesday October 8, your job will be to figure out the following:

1) What car will you buy and why?

2) Google your car, go the car's website, then find out:
a) How many gallons does your gas tank hold? b) How many miles do you get per gallon (mpg)?

3)Now you can figure out how much will it cost you to fill your tank. Use the link below to find local gas prices.
